How to Be a Better Submissive: Professional & Lifestyle D/s
From My Mind as Irreverent Femme
You Can Consume Kink, or You Can Build a D/s Relationship
Let’s get one thing straight and the rest kinky.
There aren’t many people you trust this side of yourself with. I know how risky it can feel to share it. I have seen that vulnerability again and again throughout my decade-long career as a Sex, Intimacy & Kink Coach and in my work as a Pro-Domme.
I also know some of you are looking for attention and a fix.
And some of you are not especially discriminating when it comes to getting your kink fix.
You search for the next person who can give you the feeling you want because learning how to use your adult words, tolerate vulnerability, and build emotional intimacy is harder than finding another kink dispenser.
There is a choice here.
You can continue consuming.
Or you can learn how to participate in an actual satisfying relationship. I choose this way in My life and work.
Professional D/s and Lifestyle D/s Are Not the Same Thing
Transactional relationships are legitimate.
Professional D/s can be beautiful, skillful, ethical, intimate, cathartic, educational, and deeply meaningful. You can pay a Domme for her time, expertise, attention, and the experience She has agreed to create with you.
That is a real relationship too, but it is a professional one, with professional boundaries and a negotiated container. Problems begin in professional relationships when the submissive client begins to treat the Professional Dominant as if they’re entitled to their attention and labor outside of the transactional container.
Lifestyle D/s is structured differently.
Lifestyle dynamics involve an ongoing relationship in which power exchange exists alongside the reality that two full human beings are relating to one another over time and there isn’t a transactional container. You need to more deeply know your own D/s needs, desires and capacities and be able to communicate those originally and as they evolve in check-ins as needed.
Problems begin in lifestyle relationships when someone wants the emotional benefits of a lifestyle relationship while behaving like a consumer. I have seen this time and time again in couples I have worked with who want to play in kink and D/s and even weaponize D/s to try to get their way at the expense of their partner.
To construct a healthy (yes, healthy!) and satisfying, sustainable D/s relationship, be it lifestyle to professional, you must take all of the following into consideration and hold yourself accountable.
You are participating in a relationship.
And that means your impact matters.
Your communication matters.
Your ability to notice another human being matters.
When you expect containment and labor without reciprocity.
When you expect access without regard for someone else’s capacity.
When you repeatedly arrive dysregulated and assume the Dominant should take care of you and feed you emotionally because you have paid, served, submitted, or become aroused.
That is not the same thing as submission.
We Are Adults Who Use Our Words Here
I see how often accountability gets shifted onto the Domme.
“I’m incapable of controlling myself around you.”
“I’m helpless to you.”
“You have too much power over me.”
Inside negotiated play, that language can be beautiful and sexy.
Outside of that container, it does not excuse you from responsibility.
We’re adults who use our words here and don’t hide behind fantasy when the dynamic has a hiccup.
If you use the fantasy of helplessness to dodge accountability for yourself in the relationship, that is not surrender. It is avoidance.
Adults are able to name what the dynamic actually is:
A negotiated, sophisticated emotional playground between two people who are both involved and accountable.
The power is shifted in the negotiated dynamic. The responsibility to know yourself and advocate for your needs, desires and capacity across the span of the relationship in negotiation and check-ins is mutual.
FYI. If you find yourself dealing with a play partner on either side of the D/s slash who is unwilling to have check-ins or negotiate to your level of comfort, you have someone that probably isn’t a safe fit for you and you may have a user and possibly abuser rather than someone that actually cares for you in this very delicate type of emotional and psychological play.
Submission Is Not Outsourcing Your Emotional Regulation
There is a difference between being contained inside a consensual dynamic and outsourcing your containment to another person.
D/s can absolutely involve co-regulation.
It can involve surrender, caretaking, vulnerability, discipline, regression, intensity, catharsis, structure, psychological play, and the experience of being deeply held.
But adults remain responsible for learning themselves.
Adults communicate.
Adults notice when something has changed.
Adults say when they cannot show up the way they normally do.
Adults repair.
Adults hear a boundary without automatically turning it into abandonment.
Adults understand that the Domme they submit to is also a full human being whose attention, nervous system, emotional labor, sexuality, and care do not exist solely to manage them.
So many of you crave connection, but run when you are asked to show up as adults for a conversation when there is impact needing a conversation and possible repair. That’s disappointing.
I don’t play with children, even though I am often called Mommy.
Adults who are capable and demonstrate using their words, are worthy of serving.
Consuming Kink Will Not Necessarily Give You Intimacy
Many are searching for acceptance.
You want to feel seen.
You want the parts of yourself you have hidden or struggled to put into words to finally be met.
And I understand that.
But if you have not actually explored what is happening inside you, you may keep consuming experiences without ever feeling sustainably satiated because you can’t identify and communicate it to then co-create it effectively.
Instead.
You get the fantasy.
You get the attention.
You get the kink fix.
You get the dopamine hit.
Then it fades.
So you search again.
Another Domme. Another scene. Another platform. Another interaction.
And if you have not learned how to tolerate vulnerability or take responsibility for how you affect other people, the void may also continue to grow.
You cannot consume your way into emotional intimacy. You have to participate in it.
What Adult Submission Actually Looks Like
I have a submissive of at least eight years.
He knows how to check in as an adult and use his words.
He communicates where he is in his life and how that may affect his ability to show up in service to Me.
He also shares, in equal human moments, how the dynamic is affecting him, what is working, what is not working, what he needs to name, and what deserves a conversation.
That does not make him less submissive.
It makes the submission more sustainable and deeper.
He understands that there are two human beings inside the relationship even when one of us is very intentionally holding authority over the other.
Be like My sub.
He is an adult playing at a high level.
Do You Want to Consume, or Do You Want to Build?
That is increasingly the distinction I care about.
If you want a one-off or short-term professional fantasy experience, there are many skilled people who can provide that beautifully.
Professional Dominants exist for a reason and I’m so happy we do.
Name what you want honestly and be receptive to if it’s a fit for the Dominant.
Pay the Dominant well for it.
Respect the container.
Enjoy it.
But if what you want is an ongoing D/s relationship, then you need relational skills.
You need accountability.
You need self-awareness.
You need to know how to communicate when things are uncomfortable.
You need to understand how your needs and behaviors affect the person you are submitting to.
You need to learn the difference between being hungry and making your hunger someone else’s responsibility.
Looking to Make Yourself a High-Value Submissive?
You may be searching for ways to please and be validated for it in your own way.
Learn the tools.
Learn yourself.
Hold yourself accountable for your impact.
Learn how to repair.
Learn how to communicate.
Learn how to serve without constantly turning your service back into another demand for attention.
Don’t just be a child with a bank account expecting miraculous scenes from your vague description of your kink and expect the Professional to just read your mind perfectly.
Be an adult capable of participating in the kind of relationship you claim to want.
That is where the sophisticated D/s begins.
If you want to strengthen your relational skills and learn how to participate in sophisticated, high-accountability D/s, you can schedule a coaching consultation with me here.
